ATUG 2006 Award Winners

The ATUG Awards recognise the outstanding performance and contributions made by Australians in our dynamic Telecommunications Industry. The
purpose of the Awards is to promote innovation and the development of World Class or World Best Practices in Telecommunications.

Charles Todd Medal (Communicator of the Year) - Neville Stevens
This Award recognises the person whom ATUG considers has made the most significant contribution in terms of promoting telecommunications as an essential element in national industry growth, the enabling of healthy competition, and the awareness of end users of the value of world best practice telecommunications to our nation.

Neville Stevens, the Chairman of the Australian Communications Industry Forum, ACIF. Neville Stevens is well known within the communications and information technology industries. During the past two decades he has had a major involvement in all Commonwealth Government industry, telecommunications, broadcasting and information economy issues from both a domestic and international perspective.

ACIF and its work has been of great importance in the Self Regulatory environment and the Neville’s stewardship of this organisation and in particular his regard for user involvement has been very much appreciated.

ATUG Chairman’s Award - Bob Lions
The Chairman’s Award recognises an outstanding contribution to the communications industry and continuing support for ATUG and its objectives.

Bob Lions has had a very successful career over many years in the communications industry primarily in senior engineering roles at OTC and Standards Australia. Bob has assisted ATUG on technical advisory committees and contributed selflessly to ATUG in all aspects of its activities.

Innovations in Telecommunications - Telstra Fixed SMS Service
This award recognises product and service developers who have delivered a service or product that has contributed to the development of the telecommunications industry and to the business sector in Australia. A service or product nominated should have had a successful pilot trial or been successfully in use for at least three months.

Telstra’s fixed network customers can now send and receive text messages (SMS) from their compatible home or business phone - same as you would from a mobile. The deaf and hearing impaired who use mobile SMS extensively can now communicate using “off the shelf” telecommunications products and services combined with their compatible PSTN service.

Excellence in Telecommunications Management - AARNet
This award recognises the efforts of Communications Managment, drawing attention to examples of meritorious performance, management excellence and innovation, and identifying best practices.

AARNet has designed and built the third generation of one of the world’s most advanced and wide reaching networks for future generations of Australian researchers and educators. This network is the result of a partnership between the shareholders, government and the private sector. It is a multi-Gigabit SDH network based on a mix of ‘dark fibre’ and DWDM overlays.

Best Communications Solution - Large Business - Intel Solutions Services
The nominees for this award must demonstrate how it has provided a communications solution to a large business, which has efficiently, and cost effectively contributed to the successful operation of that business. The submission should also indicate the scope and time to establish the solution and the extent of ongoing service levels offered. Solutions nominated should have been operating successfully for a minimum of twelve months.

Intel Solutions Services provided the Alfred Hospital with an Airspan WiMAXnetwork between the main hospital and two satellite facilities which resulted in increased productivity and and performance leading to improved patient care. And an estimated return on investment of $450K over three years.

Best Communications Solution – Regional - (EGRRS)
The nominees for this award must demonstrate how it has provided a communications solution to a businesses in regonal area's, which has efficiently, and cost effectively contributed to the successful operation of that business. The submission should also indicate the scope and time to establish the solution and the extent of ongoing service levels offered. Solutions nominated should have been operating successfully for not less than twelve months.

Eastern Goldfields Regional Reference Site – Using IP Systems and CISCO the EGRRS private health network provides advanced IP applications and telemedicine in a single converged network.

Best Communications Solution – Regional - Mackay Sugar
MacKay Sugar set up networks and IT systems with the twin objectives of managing field operations more effectively with fewer people while providing more comprehensive, timely and relevant information to members of the supply chain, most importantly growers and harvesting contractors. Their solution now allows automated management of farming, harvesting, transport and milling through to markets.

Best Communications Solution - Small Business - engin
The nominees for this award must demonstrate how it has provided a communications solution to a small business, which has efficiently, and cost effectively contributed to the successful operation of that business. The submission should also indicate the scope and time to establish the solution and the extent of ongoing service levels offered. Solutions nominated should have been operating successfully for not less than twelve months.

engin – “The Broadband Phone Company” A combination of the engin Voice Box series 2 hardware, its network and ongoing service work well to provide an overall small to medium business telecommunications solution.

Carrier of the Year - PIPE Networks
This award recognises a Carrier that has made a significant contribution to Australian business telecommunications users. Nominees should demonstrate how they have provided cost affective and efficient services to the Australian business community.

PIPE Networks has demonstrated market leadership through their innovative approach in delivering Dark Fibre solutions to the industry.

Communications Journalist of the Year - Michael Sainsbury
This award recognises a person considered to have made a substantial contribution to communications journalism by bringing to the industry, the public, and Government, accurate and timely reporting of communications issues.

The role of journalism cannot be understated in advancing the industry. The issues that confront the Communications industry are often technically complex and involve both business and regulatory issues. Strong analytical skills, a depth of understanding built up over time and the ability to present balanced arguments are the mark of a professional journalist. Michael Sainsbury has demonstrated these skills.
