What is a Bricklayer?
A bricklayer is a person, who creates or builds walls and foundations using various types of bricks, blocks and styles. A bricklayer is usually a member of a construction team who works at residential, commercial and industrial projects.
Bricklayers work under the supervision of a masonry contractor. They perform all the tasks assigned by their immediate superior which include measuring and clearing up the construction area.
Aside from these physical preliminary tasks, they are also responsible for the calculations of the total cost of all the materials needed for the project. There are also times when they are also the ones who are asked to buy and secure all the necessary materials that will be used for the project.
But the primary expertise of all bricklayers is their ability to layer bricks precisely. If you think that brick layering is just an easy task, then you are definitely wrong. Brick layering is a skill that requires years to master. As a matter of fact, the task demands too much precision that a bricklayer should have a keen eye for details to ensure that every wall they build is stable.
Not everyone can be a bricklayer. A bricklayer needs to be physically strong, manually dexterous, has undergone apprenticeship and earned a certification. A bricklayer should also be capable of reading and analyzing blueprints and simple sketches. Bricklayers should also be knowledgeable in using power tools and construction equipments.
If you want to be a bricklayer, you should work out your muscles to heighten your strength. This is very important because the job involves lifting of heavy materials like bricks, blocks, sacks of sand, cement and the like.
Though the minimum educational attainment for a bricklayer is only a high school diploma, acquiring a certificate of completion from any apprentice programs could help one to easily find a job.
