ATUG's year long Regional Broadband Roadshow has been completed! This has been a very big project – visiting 21 regional centres from in 5 states, between March and October 2004, and a very successful one – 1000 business and community leaders have attended the Roadshow seminars, but many times more than that have heard about the Roadshow and broadband in their community. It is clear that demand is not problem with broadband in regional Australia. The two issues are awareness of the options and DSL based supply. Regional Australia is also well aware that “bonsai” broadband at 256kbps is not adequate. One of the lessons from the Roadshow is that effective competition is a very important part of the answer to accelerating broadband usage. Most users did not realize the options that were open to them until visiting the Roadshow. ATUG has been pleased to play a central role in bringing up to date information to end users about the benefits of broadband, the government programs to help communities get broadband and the choices of broadband service and suppliers that are on offer. ATUG is very appreciative of the support – from our stakeholders , and the commitment of the staff and resources to actively participating at the seminars and with the local communities. Without their support we simply would not have been able to undertake this important project. The feedback we have had from end users has been very positive. Case studies were a key feature at each seminar event. Feedback from suppliers about the level of business they have done and see into the future is good news for regional end users. Feedback from local councils and business groups about the value of broadband and their commitment to getting their town connected has been strong. ATUG will be compiling a report on the Broadband Roadshow to capture the ideas and issues. ATUG plans to discuss the outcomes of the seminars with key policy makers. John Pack from ATUG has been the project Manager for the entire event. Once again, many thanks for all our stakeholders and audiences around Australia who supported the ATUG’s 2004 Regional Broadband Roadshow. Our special thanks to SPAN and SETEL.
