Terrazzo is an Italian style of flooring that is attractive, durable and low-maintenance. It is made up of composite materials that include chippings of marble, granite, glass and other stones, which is poured to a cement binder with added color paint to achieve the desired hue. To have a uniform texture, terrazzo surfaces are cured, ground and polished respectively.
Traditionally, terrazzo flooring is formed at the work site itself than pre-casted on a shop and mounted. The first step in installing terrazzo flooring is preparing the concrete bed that would serve as its foundation. After the cement layer is smoothed, it is the embedded with chips of marble stones that are of various colors, sizes and shapes. The arrangement of these pieces of stone chip that make up a terrazzo is often done in free form.
However, if you are the type of homeowner who wants to see a pattern of design all over your flooring, then you could request your contractor to lay these chips in such a way that they would create repetitive designs. Once the chips are dried, a trowel, a grinding machine and other smoothening tools are then used to evenly flatten the entire surface. After this, the flooring is then polished to earn shine. The final step of this procedure involves the cleaning of the work area and the sealing of gaps and other missed openings.
