What is Structural Engineering?
Structural engineering is generally considered as a subfield of civil engineering, but because it covers a wide range of knowledge and could be very complex, it is sometimes studied on its own. Structural engineering is a field of engineering that deals with the analysis and design of blueprints and charts to construct a structure that either supports or resist load. Though structural engineers are commonly hands on in designing blueprint for building and non-building structure like roads, bridges, tunnels and the like, their expertise could also help a lot in the designs of equipment, tools and vehicles.
More than the aesthetics, structural engineers more importantly considers the safety, strength and serviceability of their designs. For instance, the building designs that they created should be able to withstand natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes, sudden temperature change and structural weights. The blueprints of structures should always be designed in such a way that they would not collapse without due warning.
Structural engineers work with architects and other kinds of engineers for the completion of a construction project. The quality of their works is also partially dependent on the works of other professionals around them.
Structural engineers have their own field of specialization. Though most of them are more adept in building engineering, there are also some who are more knowledgeable in pipe engineering, bridge construction and building industrial structures.
If you want to be a structural engineer, you are required to finish a bachelors degree related to civil engineering. After which, you should secure an engineering licensed through passing the engineering board exam in your country. Also, it is always a plus factor to have a masters degree in structural engineering. But aside from this educational training, one should also have a considerable hands-on experience in the field of engineering before becoming one.
